By: Asia Society Citi made the announcement of the funding at Asia Society’s Annual Awards Dinner Thursday in New York, where Unilever, MTV World, and TPG founder David Bonderman were honored for working to help improve lives and strengthen relations between the United States and Asia. “Citi is pleased to partner with Asia Society and support its groundbreaking new Policy Institute,” said Stephen Bird, Chief Executive Officer of Citi Asia Pacific. “We believe the Institute will foster dialogue, understanding and progress on Asia’s most pressing issues and have a lasting impact on U.S.-Asia relations.” The donation will go toward funding the first stages of the Institute's work, which involve the study and pursuit of solutions in areas of vital importance for the future of the Asia-Pacific region, including global business and trade, sustainability challenges, and regional security. “We thank Citi for its generous donation to broaden Asia Society’s policy work to improve ties between the U.S. and Asia,” said Asia Society President Josette Sheeran. “The Asia Society Policy Institute will have the unparalleled ability to look at issues not from just one nation’s perspective, but rather from multiple national perspectives." The Asia Society Policy Institute will build upon Asia Society’s trusted brand and neutral platform to bring together multi-sector stakeholders in the fields of policy, business, and civil society. This work will include creating a network of experts on key issues to seek consensus among stakeholders in the U.S. and Asia, building partnerships for prosperity to help create sustainable investment and growth in Asian nations, and holding high-level forums and public events with the goal of identifying best practices in the region. Asia Society has a long history of bringing Asian and American leaders and thinkers together to share ideas in an unbiased setting geared toward finding solutions. In recent years the organization has issued important reports on topics including Myanmar’s reform process, the U.S.’s policy in South Asia, and police reform in Pakistan. It has held public forums with major world leaders including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Myanmar’s Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and President Thein Sein, and U.S. National Security Advisor Tom Donilon. Asia Society is also a recognized leader in Track II policy dialogue, tripartite, and regional dialogues, particularly in cases where official relations are inadequate or not possible. This includes current initiatives focused on U.S.-Iran relations, U.S.-Myanmar relations, and U.S.-Myanmar- To learn more about ASPI and Asia Society’s policy work visit AsiaSociety.org/ About the Asia Society Policy Institute Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI), an independent, non-partisan, and global institute created to address the critical political and economic issues facing Asia and the United States in the 21st Century.
