Twelve Milwaukee Debate League high school students will compete for over $20,000 in scholarships

MILWAUKEE - Oct. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Milwaukee, WI (October 17, 2013) Milwaukee Debate League (MDL) students from Nicolet High School, Veritas High School and Rufus King High School will represent Milwaukee at the George W. Bush Economic Debate to be held in Dallas, Texas on October 19th and 20th.  The tournament, which is hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, will bring over 100 of the nation’s top high school debaters together to debate and discuss economic issues and to compete for over $20,000 in scholarships.

In 2012 the Bush Institute initiated its high school debate program as a part of its larger economic initiative, the 4% Growth Project.  In 2013, the debate program was expanded to include five regional tournaments and an online contest, through which students across the United States had the chance to qualify for the championship debate tournament to be hosted at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.  The program is limited to high school-age students and is focused on the study of economics.  The goal of the debate initiative is to encourage students to think critically about economic issues during their formative years.  Numerous studies have shown that debate programs help students develop valuable thinking and communications skills, contributing to their development into future community and business leaders.
