MESA, Ariz. - Oct. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- What is the best seat cover material?  Is it fabric?  Is it leather?  This has been a popular debate in the car-world recently.  Some are sure that it is leather; others are sure that it is fabric.  I’ll take a stab at this controversy, and see what we come up with.  First, it is important to note that “fabric” seat covers is a term that includes many types of fabric materials.  So, think of this competition like golf’s Ryder Cup:  United States vs. all of Europe.  Furthermore, there are particular types of fabric that might not demonstrate some of the characteristics that will be presented here, so take it with a grain of salt.

We’ll begin with leather seat covers (http://www.seatcoversunlimited.com/).  Leather has a wonderfully luxurious look to it, and is valued very high.  It is considered a durable material, and spills don’t normally soak within the material (no stains).  Moreover, leather does not wear easy, and is capable of lasting a long time.  It is also quite easy to clean, though it does require specific products in order to do it.  A downside to leather is it’s susceptibility to heat and cold temperatures.  This means the leather material easily becomes hot to the touch in warm weather, and cold to the touch in cold weather.  There have even been reports of 1st degree, and even 2nd degree, burns from leather seats.  In addition, leather can be easily be ripped and damaged by sharp objects.

Fabric seat covers are usually a less luxurious look than leather, however; there is much more variety (colors, patterns, types, etc).  Fabric is much harder to clean, tracking dirt and grime a lot more than leather.  Furthermore, fabric is considered less durable in regards to spill-resistance and wear-resistance, but on the other hand; fabric shows more resistance in regards to being cut or holed by sharp objects.  Also, fabric is not susceptible to hot or cold climates like leather; they are able to maintain a reasonable temperature throughout.  The most significant benefit of fabric is that it’s a much more affordable option.

Here is a quick overview of each section with a designated winner:

Price:  fabric

Variety:  fabric

Durability:  leather

Cleanability:  leather

Comfortability:  fabric

The X-Factor (look, attitude, etc.):  leather

What we have here folks is a good old fashioned draw:  3 to 3.  However, I believe that we’ve figured out a way to choose which one is going to be good for you.  If your budget is smaller go with a fabric seat cover, but if money isn’t a part of the equation; leather seat covers might be the ones for you.
