Bobby Casanova is No Gentleman, but His Charm Will Grow on You in Torenli’s, Last of the Creeps

Equal parts Fredo and Falstaff, a true loser by anyone's definition and arguably one of the most self-absorbed, pathetic anti-heroes in the modern history of urban literature, Brooklyn born-and-bred Bobby Casanova isn't just his own worst enemy, he's also quite adept at making new ones in nearly every aspect of his low-down life.

HAMPSTEAD, Md. - Oct. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Bobby Casanova could be an everyday kind of guy, if it weren’t for the fact that he has a terrible attitude towards those around him. Bobby is floating through life, bouncing from job to job, ogling his female coworkers, calling in sick to watch football, all the while enjoying the recreational use of varied illegal substances. He cares very little about the feelings of others, their condition in life or their place in the world. And so when trouble comes for Bobby (and it always does), it’s usually his fault.

A racist by proxy in his once Italian-American dominated neighborhood turned melting pot and a heavy smoker, both of legal and illegal inhalants, the 40-something man-child of a loner is forced to confront both his inner-demons and, perhaps most painfully, those who still love him and have a sliver of hope that he can make something of a life that went off the rails nearly three decades earlier following a well-chronicled murder-suicide that took both his parents.

Bobby’s apathy and excess lead him to losing his comfortable job of eleven years, and he finds himself without a clear goal. Maybe he can get some help from his doting Aunt Ce or her boyfriend of the month. Or maybe Cousin Alphonse will be able to hook him up with something, legal or otherwise? Maybe he can even find some time to tear himself away from his Asian porn videos to find true love. But the truth is, Bobby is lost; lost in a world he doesn’t understand.

Umit John Torenli has created a character that defines some of the worst human behavior we know, yet Bobby Casanova has qualities that all of us can appreciate. So the questions are, will Bobby self-destruct, injuring all those around him, or will he continue on in life never learning how to treat others with the care and respect they deserve? Last of the Creeps takes an honest and stark look at a character our current New York culture is slowly but surely, and perhaps most happily, leaving behind. But it also provides an opportunity for a  burnt out, bald and broke never-was loser like Bobby to take at least one more shot at making good. This well-crafted first-person narrative promises to offend you, as well as make you understand that the dying voice of a dying neighborhood and generation can be entertaining and worth listening to.
