Romantic Reading for the Witching Hour

Author's latest historical romance makes a surprisingly good choice for Halloween reading lists.

EDMONTON, Alberta - Oct. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- It’s full steam ahead for that most haunting season of Halloween. No matter the reason for loving this time of year—be it for the escapism or the massive stockpiles of bite-sized candy we amass in preparation for trick or treaters—people are loading their ereaders and ipads with all sorts of terrifying treats. And with the long-awaited launch of Sleep Doctor from scare-master Stephen King, literary horror has been flying off the book shelves. For those with a slightly lower threshold for terror, but who still love the spirit of the season fear not (pun intended), author Kat Flannery has the perfect option.

Even those who love Halloween don't always like their ventures into other realms to be of the horrific variety, and for those people Flannery suggests looking into supernatural romance, a genre she's being growing to love more and more. The author of historical romances Chasing Clover and Hazardous Unions has taken the paranormal plunge in her own work with the recently released Lakota Honor, a historical romance that explores supernatural lore associated with the Lakota Sioux.

"I'm a huge fan of Halloween, one of my favourite things to do in October is curl up with a book that delves into the other-worldly. But I'm not so much a fan of the gore and masked murderers running around in goalie masks that a lot of people associate with it," says Flannery. "So one of the joys of writing this book was getting to combine the romantic elements with those of the supernatural."

Flannery has a keen sense of just how powerful those elements of paranormal can be in literature, "I actually find books to hold far more potential for evoking fear than movies. With a movie it’s all right there on the screen—rarely is anything left to the imagination. But with a book your mind is doing all the work. And by the same token, the romantic elements are heightened in a similar way!"

So those seeking a hint of Halloween in their October reading—without the nightmarish side effects of a King or Koontz—would do well to take a step into the realm of supernatural romance and balance out the darkness with some romantic light.
