LONDON - Oct. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Data from employer absence software, hronline has revealed that 83% of workplace absence is under 7 days and 73% of sick days occur on a Monday. The findings come from new research by hronline which quested 2045 employers.

Alan Price, managing director of hronline said today, “Unplanned absence has a serious impact on the UK economy, plus it is frustrating for the employers. Plus it doesn’t take into account the intangible costs such as loss of productivity, reputational damage and the management time to administer it. Before you can start to reduce absenteeism in your business you need to manage it and understand it. Employees are not afraid to ‘pull a sickie’ especially if they feel their employer is not strict or fails to have a absence policy in place. Bosses need to get tough, you need to sit down with return to work employees and conduct a back to work interview.  You need to communicate to all workers that you do not stand for unauthorised absence,  those who disregard the rules will be disciplined. You need to ensure that any sickness is genuine, you must take into account the reasons given and make a decision on the back of what the employee says. “

Price continues, “You also need a deterrent to monitor and prevent absenteeism from occurring. This is where hronline comes in, firstly you need to start to record you sickness, hronline does this in 2 clicks, next hronline prompts you to conduct your return to work interviews and thirdly hronline gives you reports which allow you to see themes and trends across your business.  By following these 3 simple steps you get back in the driving seat and can proactively manage your absenteeism.   Just by putting these processes in place your employees much less likely to throw that Monday morning sickie.”

Price concludes, “Remember be firm but fair when it comes to absenteeism issues, by tackling it head on, taking a firm stance will show that you are serious, and that you do not stand for employees who ‘pull sickies’. Once employees are aware that you do not take sickness lightly are less likely to falsify illness and hopefully you will notice a drop in unauthorised sickness. “
