Survey Shows Growth in Wildlife-Associated Recreation

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation, over 90 million Americans hunt, fish or watch wildlife.

Oct. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- That’s an eleven percent increase in fishing and a nine percent increase in recreational hunting since 2005.

These figures show that 38 percent of the population 16 years or older participate in these forms of wildlife associated recreation.

The 2011 report offers details into the amount of time that anglers and hunters spend on fishing and hunting trips. According to the 2011 report, anglers spent an average of 17 days on the water hunters spent an average of 21 days afield.

Financially speaking, anglers in 2011 spent on average $1,262. Hunters spent an average of $2,484. in 2011. The combined expenditures of hunters, anglers and wildlife-recreationists were $145. billion.

This increase in spending is a major contributor to the economy. Due to an increased demand for private hunting land, more farmers and ranchers are capitalizing on the opportunity to earn income from leasing their land to hunters and hunting groups.

“Quite simply, the public desire for hunting and other outdoor recreational opportunities

increasingly exceeds the amount of land available for such activities. ...Private-enterprise has

stepped up to fill that demand. Hunting resorts and other private enterprises fill that void nicely.”

According to Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND)

While the current demand for hunting property provides an opportunity for landowners to earn some extra income, for landowners who are considering leasing out their land, it is important to take into account the necessary liability insurance that should be taken out before allowing hunters on their land.

The insurance specialists at Texas Outdoor Insurance recommend a general liability policy for landowners who are planning to lease their land out to hunters. A liability policy can provide valuable protection against liability should an accident occur on the landowner’s property.

The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation is conducted every five years, and has been since 1955.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service coordinated this 2011 survey that was administered by the U.S. Census Bureau.
