Despite Bad Luck, Connor De Phillippi Still Leaves Oschersleben As The Rookie Leader

For Porsche Motorsport Junior driver Connor De Phillippi, rounds 12 and 13 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany were a challenge to say the least. Despite this, De Phillippi feels the team is clicking on all cylinders and ready for Zandvoort.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - Oct. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- The challenges started immediately for the vast majority of the 31 car grid at Oschersleben. Unfortunately for Connor De Phillippi, those challenges started in qualifying for race 12, preventing the Porsche Junior driver from starting the weekends first race further up the field.

"Qualifying was definitely a challenge for the Roboscan Internet Security GT3 Cup car. I felt we had a very fast car and the team was again working on all cylinders. However, there were a number of incidents on track during the qualifying session and we just weren't able to string together a laptime we were happy with. As a result, we had to start the first race in P13, which definitely did not show the true pace of the car."

As round 12 went green, De Phillippi got a good start, gaining a couple positions in the opening laps. The battle for extra positions in the short sprint race was another challenge, but De Phillippi was able to hold those gained positions, hold on to P11 and set himself up with the opportunity for a good result in round 13 by qualifying in P8.

Things immediately looked promising for the young American in round 13, as he got a great jump off the line. However, going into turn one, all it took was one wrong choice and a snowball effect took place. "My start was very good, but going into turn 1, I chose the wrong side of the track and right away I lost a few positions. Going into turn 2, Edwards and I made slight contact and I lost another position. In a matter of just a few corners, about four positions were lost and it was time to focus on moving forward as quickly as possible."

As the race continued, De Phillippi did move forward and was showing great pace. However, as he was attempting to make a pass for P9, Zoechling defended very aggressively, leaving De Phillippi no other option but to try the outside. A slight lockup ensued and this forced the car to understeer and briefly go off track. This did not stop the push forward, but with just a few laps left, De Phillippi had to settle for P12.

"This weekend was very frustrating for myself and the team. We knew we had a great car, but some bad luck and a couple mistakes and incidents on track did not allow us to show our true pace. It's a shame the results did not reflect this pace, but we are still confident we have some forward momentum with the car's pace. It should be a fun weekend for rounds 14 and 15 at Zandvoort. A huge thank you to the FORCH Racing/Lukas Motorsport team and to my sponsor, Roboscan Internet Security for their support and hard work. We have a good feeling our luck will change in Zandvoort!"

With four rounds left in the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland Championship, De Phillippi is continuing to lead the way in the Rookie of the Year Championship.

The next two rounds take place at Zandvoort from September 27th - 29th, follow by the final race weekend of the 2013 season at the famous 4.574 km Hockenheimring from October 18th - 20th.
