Announcing the WABA Jersey Expressions Women’s Professional Basketball Team

Newark’s Own Vanessa Watson will lead the 1st year Franchise as Head Coach

NEWARK, N.J. - Oct. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Newark, N.J. (October 12, 2013) – The Jersey Expressions is a 1st year franchise in the newly formed Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA- www.WABABB.com).  This will be the inaugural season for the WABA, though last year exhibition games were played as a prelude to the start of the ‘Official’ season.  The formation of the WABA is a sister league to the ABA, just as the WNBA is that to the NBA!

The formation on the WABA is another avenue which is allowing women to pursue basketball beyond college at a professional level.  The Jersey Expressions (www.jerseyexpress.net/jerseyexpressions) is looking forward to fielding a competitive team comprised of the best women players in the tri state area.   We welcome all players to come out and showcase their talent and compete for a spot on the roster; stated Director of Operations Gail Bryant.

‘This is a great opportunity for more women in basketball to have a chance to compete at the highest level.  I am honored to be a part of something that will positively impact the game of basketball for females.  The excitement that the league will bring to players and fans will hopefully be something that will be around for a very long time.  Given the opportunity to be the Head Coach, has provided the challenge that I have dreamed about for many years.  I hope all are as excited as I am.  I look forward to the continued support of the community; stated Vanessa Watson, Head Coach.

“I am proud to finally be able to announce that there will be a women’s professional team in NJ, stated Marsha Blount, team owner.  I’ve been waiting for this announcement for as long as I’ve had my men’s team.  Mr. Joe Newman, ABA CEO has, for as long as I’ve known him, been an advocate for opportunity.  The WABA will provide the same opportunities to women, as the ABA does for men.  We’ll be able to provide 12 women with an opportunity to continue their careers, work on their games, or for some…play at a higher level.  The great thing is we’re in no way competing with the WNBA, but giving women who haven’t made it to that level, or those who’d like to stay home in the off-season, an opportunity”.

“There’s no doubt about it; the popularity of women’s basketball is growing at a phenomenal rate at the youth, high school, college and professional level,” said Joe Newman, ABA CEO. “The skill levels of today’s women players are tremendous. The timing is right.”
