Follow on Google News | New England Health Center Supports Breast Cancer Awareness MonthNew England Health Center, a Leading Skilled Nursing Facility in Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley, Spreads Awareness of Risk Reducing Activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
By: New England Health Care According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer related death in women. Even though the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased over the years, there has been a steady decline in cases of death since the early 1990’s. It is estimated that around $8 billion a year is spent in the United States each year on breast cancer related treatment. While it is unclear as to what particularly causes breast cancer, there are ways to reduce your risk of diagnosis. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms has been shown to increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants and exposure to radiation. Ultimately, it is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells. “All of us at NEHC are so proud to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We have all been touched in one way or another by this terrible disease and we strongly feel that by raising awareness in our community we can help reduce the number of diagnoses. A simple mammogram can save lives and we must get this message out there to the public”, noted Denise Corin, Marketing Director at New England Health Center.
