In February of 1998, severe rainstorms resulted in flood damages which destroyed homes and business structures, causing sinkholes, power outages and more. To better protect the City from future severe flood events, the Camarillo Hills Drain Improvement Project was designed and constructed in a collaborative effort between the City of Camarillo and the Ventura County Watershed Protection District. This project has now been completed, providing 100-year flood protection for surrounding residential and commercial properties. The project improvements are located along the Camarillo Hills Drain, adjacent to Ponderosa between Carmen Drive and Rosewood Avenue, just steps away from Camarillo’s City Hall building. Construction improvements include replacing approximately 3,380 feet of damaged and inadequate concrete trapezoidal channel with a concrete rectangular channel. The reinforced concrete box culverts at Rosewood Avenue and Carmen Drive were also reconstructed to increase capacity for flood waters. After the completion of the channel contracts, the City of Camarillo completed landscape and street improvements that include: new curbing, gutter and sidewalk, new irrigation, planters, trees, and shrubs.
