LISBON, Portugal - Oct. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- The results of a recent study show the extent that the manufacture and application of joining technologies represent in both added-value and jobs. The goal of this study is to evaluate all the statistical information available to estimate the value added contribution and the number of employees resulting from the manufacture and application of joining technology in the European Union as a whole in 2010 and 2011, the latest data boundary of this study.

The results of this latest study are a clear demonstration of the relevance of the industry in Europe and the existing opportunities to grow as part of the global strategy outlined in the Manufuture technology platform. The study was financed by DVS (German Welding Society), EWF (European Welding Federation) and EWA (European Welding Association) and was carried out by researchers at Böchum University.

In this study, the manufacture of joining technology is fundamentally understood to refer to the manufacture of goods and the rendering of services which are necessary for the joining in each case. The manufacture and application of joining technology has three direct value added effects, namely the value added of production of joining devices, the value added for the manufacture of complementary goods and finally the application of joining technology.

Study results

Joining technology constitutes a cross-sectional technology, used for the manufacture of a variety of products across different sectors. For the purposes of the study, the following broad trends and figures were identified, that are particularly relevant for welding and joining professionals:

1.       In 2010, the manufacture and application of joining technology represented €65.1 billion and provided employment to 1.2 million people in the EU(27);

2.       In terms of production values, for devices and systems, total production for the joining sector represents €7 950 million:

a.       74% (aprox. €5.900 million) of these represented by welding, brazing and cutting

b.      10% (aprox. €829 million) represented by robot systems;

c.       7% (aprox. €548 million) represented by adhesive bonding;

3.       In terms of production values for complementary goods and services, amounted to €7 539 million of which:

a.       Welding consumables represented 27% (€2 027 million);

b.      Adhesives represented 25% (€1 860 million);

c.       Gases represented 23% (€1 728 million);

4.       In terms of employment by application of joining technologies, of a total of 1,2 million in EU27:

a.       Welding currently employs 647 000 people as welders;

b.      311 300 as welding inspectors, researchers, designers, trainers and robot operators;

c.       165 900 in terms of joining-related personnel.

This study highlights the relevance of this industry in Europe as a means to increase competitiveness of EU(27) companies and provides further evidence to encourage its development as part of the strategy to support the reindustrialization of Europe.
