BOSTON - Oct. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- (Boston) —Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts congratulates Gabriella Smith for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award and the Alcoa Chuck McLane Scholarship. Smith’s Gold Award project, Rediscovering Haggett’s Pond through Modern Technology, promoted the trails surrounding Andover’s Haggett’s Pond using modern technology to make the trails’ information more accessible and appealing. Using GPS and cartography software, Smith created a detailed map of the area. She worked with volunteers to develop an informational website about Haggett’s Pond as well as a kiosk displaying a QR code that brings smart phone users to the website.

In June, Girl Scouts of the USA, in partnership with Alcoa Foundation, announced the inaugural Alcoa Chuck McLane Scholarship, which is available for Girl Scout Gold Award recipients who complete a Gold Award project that deals with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The scholarship honors former Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Chuck McLane, who retired after a 40-year career with Alcoa and Reynolds Metals Company. McLane, a GSUSA Board member, championed this program in support of young women pursuing a STEM education. Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation share McLane’s commitment to inspire girls, women and other under-represented groups on the journey to STEM-related careers.

Through 2017, Alcoa Foundation will provide $10,000 scholarships to two girls a year. In addition to the financial support, an Alcoa employee will mentor the scholarship recipient during her freshman year of college.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude for the generous scholarship provided by the Alcoa Chuck McLane Scholarship in recognition of my Girl Scout Gold Award,” explained Smith. “My Gold Award provided me the opportunity to create something that is both a reflection of my love for biology and nature and a beneficial resource to members of my community. This scholarship will provide me with the resources and encouragement needed to support my collegiate journey at Boston University.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges a girl to change the world—or at least her corner of it—and gives her the opportunity to be eligible for college scholarships, too. By the time a Girl Scout puts the final touches on her seven-step project, she will have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future.

“On behalf of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, I extend my congratulations to Gabriella for her creativity and hard work with her Gold award project.  We are so proud of her.  Our thanks to the Alcoa Chuck McLane Scholarship for recognizing her efforts,” said Ruth N. Bramson, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. “Projects such as Gabriella’s show that girls are interested in STEM, and Girl Scouting continues to build awareness and educate community leaders on the importance of increasing girls' involvement in STEM.”

During this multi-year scholarship of $10,000, each girl will be awarded $5,000 in the 2013 fall semester and another $5,000 in her junior year at an accredited college, if she maintains a 3.0 GPA and plans to continue her education in STEM or a related subject.
