MESA, Ariz. - Oct. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Getting your wisdom teeth pulled is not a fun experience, but it is nice to know what the process entails before you go through it.  Your doctor will explain everything to you as well, but if you're like me; you’ll find it difficult to remember the whole process.

The first step of the procedure is administering anesthesia.  There are three types of anesthesia options with this procedure:  local, sedation, and general.  When I had my wisdom teeth extracted, I was given local anesthesia.  If you have a choice, I do not recommend this type because you are awake during the procedure.  You don’t feel any pain, of course, but watching your dentist or surgeon slicing and dicing your mouth through his reflective faceguard can be a little horrifying.  The other two types of anesthesia you will lose consciousness, so you don’t have to witness the procedure.

The procedure itself is fairly quick, and will require your dentist or surgeon to make incisions into your gums to expose the tooth.  Then he/she will remove anything blocking the tooth from extraction.  The tooth is then removed, sometimes in pieces to make it easier.  Next, there is a cleaning process to remove any left over material.  Finally, the wound is stitched and gauze is placed there to promote blood clotting.

Once it’s over, you will be given a prescription for pain medication:  a vital remedy.  After the procedure you’ll need to drink lots of water and be careful about what you eat.  Very soft foods like yogurt are recommended.  Also, take the rest of that day to lay down and rest.  The first 24 hours are the worst, but after that; it gets better.  Even up to a week after the procedure, you must be careful about what you eat, and make sure you don’t exert yourself too much.  The danger is rupturing the blood clot that has formed, so make sure this doesn’t happen.  A good tip is to wash your mouth with warm salt water after every meal.

Wisdom teeth surgery is a terrible experience, but knowing the process helps you prepare mentally for it.  Remember that it gets much better after that first 24 hour period, so don’t worry about it too much.  Good luck!
