Autumn can be a very unpredictable season when it comes to the weather. According to the Met Office in Autumn 2012 the temperature ranged from anywhere between 4 and 16 degrees and was the wettest Autumn since 2000. Therefore it is key that you invest in a jacket (or two) that will see you through the ropey elements.
For the beginning of the season a gilet is the perfect option, and will also come in handy through Springtime. Rising in popularity in the fashion world, gilets are great for providing extra warmth without being too bulky and are ideal to wear over a long sleeve top or even a jumper on the colder days, especially when you’re out walking as they allow more freedom of movement.
A waterproof jacket is a must and a lightweight one is perfect for this time of year when you don’t need a padded, warm coat, but you do need reliable protection against the rain. Lightweight waterproof jackets are also more practical for storing in your rucksack when you’re out walking or hiking as they take up much less room.
Softshell jackets are also an Autumn staple and if you are looking for just the one jacket this season then this is the perfect option. Combining both windproof and water resistant properties, a softshell jacket is an all rounder. With most offering a slim-fitting design they will not only will they flatter your shape but they are also comfy and easy to move around in.
For those of you who are willing to spend a little more then a 3-in-1 jacket is an all rounder, featuring both a fleece, or softshell jacket, and a waterproof outer. They will also, more than likely, see you through the Winter months too but are ideal for wearing separately during Autumn.
