Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. 16th Year Observing National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Oct. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- The Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. located at 1100 S. Indian Creek Drive in Stone Mountain and online at www.baitulsalaam.org is in its 16th year of serving the Islamic community and the world with bringing more awareness of domestic abuse to the public. We network with our local state coalition of domestic violence awareness organizations, shelter providers and other faith based organizations to help get the word out that the crimes associated with domestic abuse are not a part of Islam and that Islamic teachings do not condone such behavior. In fact Islam teaches against abuse on all levels in the society.

We have started our annual campaign of distribution of lapel ribbons and literature written specifically for the Islamic community. This year we are mentioning Breast Cancer Awareness along with Domestic Violence Awareness due to both have a negative impact on families and more attention needs to be paid to both of these issues. This year we are working closely with Project Sakinah a part of the Dar Islam Movement out of New Mexico to bring more awareness to the Islamic community about domestic abuse and the negative impact that allowing the issue to go unaddressed in our faith based communities has on families in those communities.

Every Friday in October our goal is to hand out educational materials and the lapel ribbons to people who attend Salatul Jumuah the weekly Islamic congregational service throughout metro Atlanta. The volunteers who assist us with this are a part of the communities that they hand out the materials.

We are also hosting SisterSpeak'13 a program that gives Muslim women an opportunity to speak about many topics that have an impact on them and their families. This year SisterSpeak'13 will be held on Saturday, October 19, 10 am to 3 pm at the Camille Cosby Auditorium at Spelman College, 350 Spelman Lane in Atlanta. The theme is Our Roots. Guest speakers are Johnette Brooks who is a tribute specialist and geneologist and Zerqa Abid coordinator of Project Sakinah (via live feed) the program is open to the public.Tickets are $5 students/senior citizens (over age 62) and $10 for all others. A continental breakfast, light nutritious lunch and one snack will be served.  You can buy tickets via  https://sisterspeak13.eventbrite.com or call 770-255-8500 to secure tickets for the event.
