More than 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening medical disorder obstructing airflow during sleep. In addition to other complications, such as drowsiness and stroke, current studies also show direct correlations to heart disease and high blood pressure. “The Penn Sleep Center at The Pavilion at Doylestown Hospital is one of only 11 sleep centers in the US to feature this new technology”, revealed collaborator Dr. Beth Snyder. The MATRx system allows us to conduct a titration study for an oral sleep appliance. It will predict a patient’s target protrusive position from the control room during an attended sleep study without disturbing the patient’s sleep. It essentially answers the question: Are you suitable for a sleep apnea appliance and, if yes, what is the optimal setting for your new appliance? "One of the reasons that I recommend a sleep apnea appliance is because of the great number of patient’s difficulties and unwillingness in using a CPAP," says Dr. Snyder, a trained doctor in dental sleep therapies. "In using this new technology, my goal is to provide an easier and effective solution which results in more compliant patients managing their sleep apnea.
