From Pulitzer Prize winning author Frank McCourt for his remarkable novels Angela’s Ashes and ’Tis, to the storytelling charm of Irwin Shaw and his classic tale Rich Man, Poor Man—another name is now added to the list of noteworthy alumni—Janet S. Kleinman and her romantic drama, Flirting with Disaster: When Love & Nature Collide. Upon receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award, Ms. Kleinman responded with high praise for Brooklyn College and spent a few moments highlighting her foundation for a successful life and career—“…a cultured upbringing, and global opportunities regardless of gender or social station.” In Flirting with Disaster: When Love & Nature Collide, the beautiful and charming Gloria is about to set out on a new path, and for the recent widow, changing directions later in life is easier said than done. Very soon, she will find not one—but three—handsome men vying for her attention, and in the most unlikely of places. When an earthquake hits his homeland, Henri, a Haitian ex-patriot urges his friend Gloria to travel with him to Haiti to help establish a school for abandoned children. Forty years after their first kiss, former high-school boyfriend, Mickey, calls and wants Gloria back—this time though, he’s willing to follow her to Haiti to prove it. Meanwhile, in Port au Prince, another man personifies both the power and influence capable of changing Gloria’s life forever—retired United States Senator Lance Carter. The well-connected Senator presides over a relief commission currently funded by Americans for the ravaged Haitian population.
