Barbara Melvin Earns Statewide Recognition from the Small Business Development Center

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Oct. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- Dress for Success SW Florida is proud to announce that President, Barbara Melvin was recognized for her volunteer efforts at the Florida Small Business Development Center’s annual conference in Orlando on September 9th. She was awarded both the Regional Volunteer of the Year and the Florida Volunteer of the Year awards.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) (http://sbdc.fgcu.edu/) nominated Barbara Melvin for Regional Volunteer of the Year to recognize her outstanding contribution to the program in terms of advocacy, program development, and special projects.  Melvin was recognized once again at the state level for her achievements when the SBDC distinguished her as Florida Volunteer of the Year from among all other regional SBDC program award winners.

In 2012, Barbara Melvin, Vice President and Business Development Officer at Wells Fargo in Naples, volunteered over 100 hours with the SBDC at FGCU. During this time, she served as a guest lecturer, member of the FGCU SBDC Advisory Board, President and member of the Small Business Resource Network (http://www.sbrn.org/southwest-florida.php)’s SW Florida Chapter, and she facilitated assistance with financial support from Wells Fargo Foundation, which came to $30,000 in the past three years.

“We nominated Barbara because she is a great cheerleader and devoted supporter of both the SBDC and Florida Gulf Coast University. I am so happy that she has been recognized at the state level for her hard work and dedication to small business development,” says Suzanne Specht, Assistant Director of the Florida Small Business Development Network at FGCU.

In addition to volunteering for the Small Business Development Center and serving as President of Dress for Success SW Florida, Barbara Melvin offers her time and skills to a variety of organizations. Melvin is President of the Small Business Resource Network, Vice President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for Collier County, and Vice President of the Haitian Coalition for Collier County. She is also a member of FGCU’s SBDC Advisory Board and a member of the Education Foundation.
