Under the auspices of US Rowing’s America Rows program, San Diego now has a focused public benefit corporation to serve our region’s underserved youth with a non-traditional “prep” sport plus supportive learning and lifestyle markers for life. The parallel focus on this organized sport with wellness is directly synchronized with the San Diego County’s Live Well, San Diego program – particularly to combat childhood obesity and diabetes in San Diego area youth.
GPA, a UCSD Partnership, is proud and excited to be joined with CRSD. “We are extremely thankful to all associated with CRSD for their support and dedication to getting competitive high school Crew up and running at GPA” said GPA’s Athletic Director, Jim Winters.
“GPA is always looking for ways to keep our kids fit and to expose them to sports that they may never have considered; rowing is one of those sports. Crew has already become the 3rd largest sport at GPA. Our athletes have been training all summer to be ready for their first regatta coming up in 2014” said Winters.
“We considered a number of San Diego public middle and high schools to partner with on this new initiative. GPA, and its staff invited our organization to make a presentation to its student body. The response and attendance was overwhelming.”
“The next challenge is to make sure we can provide the necessary equipment to accommodate the needs for these crew teams, and to get them on the water and training as soon as possible.” Said Frost.
