That five-star rating didn't come easily, as the Silverado had to face a barrage of tests, including a frontal crash test, a side barrier crash test and a rollover test to earn the title. Key to the truck's premier safety are its fully boxed frame and extensive use of high-strength steel, features that also allow the truck to haul and tow more than previous models.
"Trucks have a reputation for being safe because they're big and heavy, but size doesn't always equate to crash worthiness. It's great to see Chevy putting the work in to build a truck that's both tough and safe in equal amounts," said Dave Ferraro, general manager of McLaughlin Chevrolet, a Chevy dealer in Massachusetts. "The Silverado has always been a leader in capability, and Chevy has set the standard once again for what a truck should be."
All-new for the 2014 model year, the Chevy Silverado puts a greater emphasis on efficiency, using lighter materials like high-strength steel and aluminum to shed weight without sacrificing strength or durability. The exterior of the truck has been sculpted to cut through the air more efficiently, which helps it return up to 23 mpg on the highway with its 5.3-liter V8. Meanwhile, payload capacity has increased to 2,007 pounds and maximum towing capacity has increased to 11,500 pounds.
