Plumb Center shows why energy efficiency matters

SALISBURY, U.K. - Sept. 30, 2013 - PRLog -- For too many families in the UK the decision of when they turn their heating on has become a matter of great anxiety, as fuel bills continue to soar.

According to Ofgem, energy prices have risen by a staggering 28% in the last three years. So many people will be tempted to save their pennies and try to keep warm whatever way they can, without using the heating.

Experts on the BBC’s website recently claimed that a variety of factors affect how each individual reacts to the cold, including age, psychology and even hair colour.

Apparently, women have colder hands and feet because the oestrogen in their bodies affects the blood flow to their skin, and ginger-haired people may be more sensitive to the cold, despite the stereotype of the tough, redheaded Scot.

But the reality for many people is that fuel poverty simply means they can’t afford to heat their homes adequately.

Government initiatives like the Green Deal, which enables people to make energy-saving improvements to their home or business without having to pay all the costs up front, will cut fuels bills, but more people need to be convinced.

A recent poll by Plumb and Parts Center shows people are conscious about energy efficiency, but more needs to be done to educate them about the government’s green initiatives.

·         52% of the respondents had heard of the Green Deal but only 28% of people were interested, and an overwhelming 92% felt they need to know more before they would get involved.

·         55% of people had fitted, or were considering fitting, energy efficient installations in their home, but there was a significant divergence across age groups. 70% of those aged 65 or over said they had/were, but 60% of 18-24 year-olds said they hadn’t considered it.

“Suffering through freezing temperatures is very bad for the health, especially for children and the elderly,” said Tim Pollard, Plumb Center’s Head of Sustainability. “So as an industry we need to do as much as possible to fight rising energy bills and fuel poverty.

“Energy efficiency is extremely important and we need to make sure UK homes are properly insulated, boilers are effective and the heating is controlled properly, so we don’t waste energy and our hard earned cash.

“We fully support government initiatives like the Green Deal but more needs to be done to convince people of the benefits, and we believe the installer has a critical role to play. It’s unacceptable in the 21st century for millions of people to fear turning on their heating.”

The survey was conducted on Plumb and Parts Center’s behalf by research and strategy consultancy Populus. Populus interviewed 2,052 UK adults online between 13 and 15 September 2013. The results have been weighted to be representative of all UK adults.
