BOSTON - Sept. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Boston, MA--The critically-acclaimed Boston-based chamber orchestra known as Discovery Ensemble conducted by Courtney Lewis, is pleased to announce a thrilling four-concert series for the 2013 - 2014 season.

By popular demand, this year all four season concerts will take place at one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the country--Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory of Music.  The first concert takes place on Sunday,  October 20 and it will feature the widely sought-after Israeli pianist, Shai Wosner.  The other concert dates are November 24, 2013 and March 2 and April 13, 2014.  The March 2 concert will be highlighted by a performance of Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major with cellist Nicolas Altstaedt while the April 13 program will include Stravinsky's Violin Concerto with the phenomenal young Chinese violinist Xiang Yu.  All four concerts take place on Sunday afternoons at 3 P.M. with "Musical Conversations" hosted by Classical New England's Brian McCreath and conductor Courtney Lewis prior to each concert at 2 P.M., on the Jordan Hall Stage.

The season opens on Sunday, October 20, 3 P.M. with a program entitled "What Is Melody?" of three works that appear to bear no relation to each other whatsoever.  The Sturm und Drang of Mozart’s great D Minor Piano Concerto with its simmering and explosive drama, the slippery, glistening modernism of Ligeti’s Melodien, and Sibelius’s pithy and moody Sixth Symphony – there are no obvious connections to be found here.  And one of the works, which is actually named "Melodies," is the piece that most listeners will probably think of as being the least melodious.  But therein lies the point.  There seems to be no consensus among these three composers about what a melody really is.  We invite the audience to immerse themselves in the very different worlds of these three masterpieces, and to hear for themselves how each of these composers has redefined "melody" to suit the special nature of what he has to say.  Shai Wosner, a wonderfully poetic young pianist from Israel, is the soloist in the Mozart.

Pianist Shai Wosner has attracted international recognition for his exceptional artistry, musical integrity and creative insight. His performances of a broad range of repertoire from Beethoven and Mozart to Schoenberg and Ligeti, as well as music by his contemporaries, communicates his imaginative programming and intellectual curiosity.  Mr. Wosner’s virtuosity and perceptiveness have made him a favorite among audiences and critics, who have praised him for his “keen musical mind and deep musical soul” (NPR’s All Things Considered) and for exemplifying a “remarkable blend of the intellectual, physical and even devilish sides of performance” (Chicago Sun Times).

Discovery Ensemble's Sunday, November 24 concert will include Adès's Chamber Symphony, Rameau's Suite from Les Boréades andBeethoven's Symphony No. 5. while theSunday, March 2, 2014 concert program includes Schubert's Symphony No. 8, "Unfinished," Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major with cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, Berg's Three Pieces from the Lyric Suite and Brahms's Symphony No. 3.

This season's final concert takes place on Sunday, April 13 and the program will be highlighted by Tchaikovsky's Serenade, Stravinsky's Violin Concerto with violinist Xiang Yu and Haydn's Symphony No. 102.
