Dan Vorhis and Bernie Mahar, based in Freeland, WA on Whidbey Island, have made GreenJeans chaps for the last 10 years. GreenJeans are heavy-duty chaps with built-in knee pads that have become a favorite of gardeners, landscapers and tradespeople. Dave and Nancy Bartholomew live on a growing farmstead in Leavenworth, WA
"I've known Dave and Nancy for many years. Dave and I worked in the same company in Seattle (Mountain Safety Research, Inc., or MSR), and shared an interest in living more simply and closer to the land." says Vorhis.
"Dave has a great business sense, and I am stronger on the product side. I had been bugging Dave for years to build a business with me based on a strong quality ethic like in our MSR days, but focused on gardening rather than camping gear. I finally wore him down, or maybe he went soft in the head!" laughs Vorhis.
The product of their partnership is "Simply Living Farm", a web-based business with a real, live store in Leavenworth, WA. A quick trip through the store turns up innovations that have already resulted from the collaboration, including an amazing stainless steel garden cart called the "WorkHorse". There are also food dehydrators, a huge selection of locally-made lavender products, books on beekeeping, as well as the now-famous GreenJeans chaps.
"We intend Simply Living Farm to be more than just a retail store." adds Dave. "Yes, we will carry products that shorten supply chains and help people to live in a more sustainable way. But there is also an educational component and a community component we intend to help fulfill. We are passionate about providing the goods and information for a simpler, more fulfilling life."
The Simply Living Farm store may be found at 925 Commercial Street Leavenworth, WA 98826 US. The website is SimplyLivingFarm.com.
