Launch of the Apprenticeship Programme –

Wednesday 23rd October – 4pm

Colliton Barton Training Centre, East Devon

The south west poultry academy has been developed through a partnership between the West Country Layers Association, the South West Chicken Association and Duchy College with the support of individual poultry businesses throughout the region.  The apprenticeship programme will offer a unique opportunity in supporting the Industry to develop the skills of young broiler and egg producers.  Where employers have a potential job vacancy the academy will raise the profile of career paths within the sector and individual employers will be supported in filling vacancies through a recruitment and matching service.

During the programme the Apprentices will be given the opportunity to learn and gain a recognised qualification in poultry skills whilst working and earning a wage. The Apprenticeship programme has been designed to cater for both egg and broiler producers with a mix of common modules applicable to both sectors and specialist modules differentiating between the sectors.  The programme will support skills required for the poultry passport scheme and lion codes etc.

The programme delivered over 18 month will include monthly workshops and on farm practicals.  The Apprentice will be supported and assessed in the workplace at regular intervals throughout the programme. Training for apprentices aged 16 to 18 is fully funded with those aged 19+ co-funded with a fee charged to the employer.   Employers who recruit an apprentice aged 16 to 24, could be eligible for a Government Apprenticeship Grant of £1,500.
