SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Sept. 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Stem cells have come a long way since being discovered in the late 1970’s and Dr. Todd Malan founder of Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center and The Center for Regenerative Cell Medicine in Scottsdale, Arizona is just one of a small group of physicians participating in groundbreaking adult stem cell research in the United States.

The goal of this research is to expand and improve the use of adipose (fat) stem cells in treating degenerative and inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s and Lupus.

In May, as part of an approved investigational research effort, Dr. Todd Malan performed a regenerative stem cell treatment on a 79-year-old Parkinson’s patient named Nikolaus Smeh. Prior to the procedure, Parkinson’s severely limited Nikolaus’s ability to participate in everyday activities; restricted his movement, affected his balance, coordination and speech. Nikolaus understood that the research treatment didn’t come with any guarantees but as a retired nutritional researcher and stem cell advocate he felt strongly about the potential stem cells could have on repairing the body. Within weeks after his stem cell treatment, Nikolaus wrote Dr. Malan describing the unbelievable progress he experienced, which included his ability to walk without assistance, drive for the first time in years and a remarkable improvement in his speech. For Nikolaus the journey with Parkinson’s disease is not over but for now he is hopeful that stem cell treatments can help those suffering mitigate symptoms and improve their quality of life.

“This research allows us to expand the public’s understanding of stem cells, their promising potential for healing capacity and the fascinating ability they have to repair what is damaged,” states Malan. “Stem cells have the amazing ability to recognize a problem in the body, take control and create healing.”

The procedure itself is approximately an hour and a half long. The stem cells are harvested from the patient’s own fat tissue via a mini liposuction procedure. Once 100 cc’s of fat is collected, Dr. Malan and his team are able to isolate the adult stem cells making them ready for reinjection into a specific injury site like a damaged knee or into the bloodstream via an IV injection.

In Nikolaus’s case the stem cells were administered into the bloodstream intravenously given that the cells have the capacity to cross the blood brain barrier making IV stem cell therapy a much more appealing course of action then other methods like bone marrow stem cell harvesting and spinal cord injections. The advantages of adipose derived stem cells are numerous offering a wide range of potential applications with minimal discomfort to the patient and proven higher cell yields than cord blood or bone marrow.

There is a growing body of research indicating that stem cells have the ability to regulate immune responses which in turn offers significant hope to those living with chronic pain or debilitating diseases.

Dedicated to his patients, Dr. Malan has formed a team of physicians from multiple disciplines in order to offer a comprehensive and supportive approach to care and treatment. Dr. Malan divides his time at his practice between cosmetic stem cell procedures and stem cell research for patients with chronic disease and degenerative disorders. Other diseases that are currently being studied with this treatment include heart disease, stroke, COPD, tissue damage and neural regeneration.

"Nikolaus is just one of many patients who continue to inspire us with weekly testimonials and encouraging results,” describes Dr. Malan. “While I have always been interested in adult stem cells, I became very passionate about the use of stem cells for degenerative diseases after a close family member was diagnosed with MS.”

As a leading innovator, Dr. Malan continues to be a pivotal pioneer and educator in developing safe protocols for stem cell harvesting in the United States. His research team is devoted to advancing access, and offering patients the opportunity to be a part of the ongoing research-based therapy that has previously only been available in other countries.
