MONTREAL - Sept. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- A new service is bringing user reviews to scholarly journals. The website, called Journal Rate, provides users with the ability to rate and review journals in a variety of categories. The end result is a Yelp-like review website for academics, making it easier than ever to choose the right journal - and avoid those that are poorly rated.

“Journal Rate is about giving authors a voice,” said Kyle Maloney, the creator of the service. “It’s a place for academics to share their publication experiences and find valuable journal rating metrics to choose the right journal to submit their research to.”

Journals in the comprehensive database - which includes thousands of publications - are categorized by field of study, impact factor, and keyword. Users can submit ratings for any journal, ranking them by ease of submission process, turnaround time, cost of publication, quality of peer review, and more.

“There are plenty of databases of academic journals, but Journal Rate is the first online community dedicated to reviews from the user perspective,” Maloney said. “This is a place for scientific authors to rate journals by the metrics that are important to them. It puts the power back into the hands of the writers.”
