"I have had offers for business writing sessions, gift cards, and QuickBooks training in order to do my job better", says recent Kwantlen Polytechnic Graduate, Hailey Lam. Hailey is one of many users of the Vancouver website, My Swapping List, that has received offers for her accounting tutor post on the site. "Next, I would really love to swap for some cooking lessons", says Lam. Students are overloaded with debt and living off of school loans or part-time incomes, so it makes sense to use their own knowledge and strengths in school to help them with areas of weakness. The Vancouver site works similar to the good old barter system where services and goods are swapped for other goods and services that are of the same value. You are matched with other users on the site based on what you offer to swap. The site has joined with charities such as: The Salvation Army, Big Brothers, and Habitat for Humanity in order to pass on un-wanted goods to those in need in local communities. Should a posted good remain on the site for 60 days or more, users have the option to donate the item to one of the sponsoring charities.
