SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sept. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- DramaDogs Soars with Production of

Defying Gravity

(Santa Barbara, CA) DramaDogs proudly presents award winning writer and director, Jane Anderson’s Defying Gravity, a clever and uplifting one-act fantasy play about space travel, spirituality and the Challenger disaster for one weekend only at Center Stage Theater from October 4 through October 6. According to the N.Y. Daily News Defying Gravity....”floats gracefully in the big blue yonder of the imagination ... Anderson‘s delicate, tender and human attitude toward her characters raises them out of their earthbound selves to look down on the world from a new perspective.”

This free structured look at the 1986 Challenger disaster places the teacher who died with six others as they hurtled into space at the center of an exploration of our need to reach beyond ourselves and dare the universe. Defying Gravity artfully interweaves the past with the present and the lives of participants and bystanders, drawing parallels among painter Claude Monet's artistic quest, the zest of the teacher selected to the first civilian astronaut, the perspectives of her grieving daughter, the aspirations of elderly tourists who drive their Winnebago to Florida to watch the space shot and dream of hotels in space, the guilt felt by a NASA mechanic and his girl friend's fear of heights.

After a powerful staged reading at Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria, DramaDogs decided to create a fully mounted production of this gripping play addressing the outer limits of human possibility and digs into our own humanity, our grief, our losses, and our triumphs. All are ideas that ignite DramaDogs’ theatrical imagination. Defying Gravity questions what we see and how we see challenging us to find connections within seemingly disparate experiences. Incorporating our body-centered approach towards character development and continuing our belief that the creative process can be transparent, once again we invite the audience to be inside the experience rather than simply be passively entertained. Following each performance audiences will be invited to remain for talk backs with the artists that demystify their creative process, illuminate the deliberate choices developed in their theatrical pieces, and give audiences the immediate opportunity to critique, comment, and express their experience

Defying Gravity is co-directed by E. Bonnie Lewis & Ken Gilbert with set & lighting design by Theodore Michael Dolas and Musical Direction by Eric Valinsky. DramaDogs cast includes: Joe Andrieu, Erica S. Connell, Ken Gilbert, Michelle A. Osborne, Craig Scott, Linda Scott, and Natascha Skerczak,

ABOUT Drama Dogs

E. Bonnie Lewis and Ken Gilbert, the Co-Artistic Directors of DramaDogs, emerged into the Santa Barbara arts scene nearly 20 years ago with their first piece entitled Air for One - a drama in eight scenes about separateness and oneness in the lives of Siamese twins. The work was heartfelt and daring, integrating movement, live music and a parachute set. The audience response was palpable with members approaching post show and thanking us for the powerful and truthful demonstration of what it “feels like to be a twin.” That piece set the tone and the bar for our work.

DramaDogs has four core members, Ken Gilbert, E. Bonnie Lewis, Michelle Osborne and Erica Connell who set the pace and tone for the work. As a multi-disciplinary body centered theater production company it celebrates the creative process and dedicated to present work that expresses their personal relationship to themselves, each other and the community. DD will continue to bring diverse material that provides heart-felt theatrical experiences; offer body centered training programs educating the professional and non-professional alike in this process, and offer affordable educational outreach activities that ultimately provide acting lessons for life to our community.
