The Proper Way To Do Collections (Read: Nice and Thoughtful Accounts Receivable)

Collections. Yuck. It’s no wonder the accounting vernacular is dunning. It sounds like a weird word amalgam of “dumb” and “dun dun DUN”. Oh the necessary evil of it all.
 
Sept. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Collections. Yuck. It’s no wonder the accounting vernacular is dunning. It sounds like a weird word amalgam of “dumb” and “dun dun DUN”. Oh the necessary evil of it all. Doing it in the fashion of TELLING people to give you money, but in a way that sounds like you’re asking. It requires a little finesse, a lot of patience, and sometimes a tough stomach. Having done Corp AP it can be hard to dial down the empathy. It can be even harder to not show it. Don’t. When you do it’s like blood in the water and your aging will be shredded. I’m talking big teeth marks. On the other side of the phone, you can be a little more aggressive, blow holes in accuracy, dispute charges, go nuts. On this side of the phone you have to have all the same tenacity, but the customer is always right. Sucks, don’t it? So, in addition to putting my headset on mute and cursing up a storm, here are a few things I’ve found that keeps my composure, and also keeps my aging from falling apart at the seams.
