TRIVANDRUM, India - Sept. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Violence against women persists unabated in every continent, country and culture; though most societies prohibit this with all means. According to WHO, 35 percent of women worldwide have experienced some type of sexual violence.  This finding sends a powerful message that violence against women is a global health problem of epidemic proportions.

The National Seminar on Violence against Women in India, happening at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala is an unmatched, can't-miss opportunity for;

ü  Understanding the issues of domestic violence and its consequences.

ü  Addressing the social and cultural factors behind women violence, in an Indian context.

ü  Analysing the intersectional dimensions of domestic violence.

ü  Addressing the support services provided to the victim.

ü  Activity based approach for a sustainable, participatory and effective remedy.

In a traditional country like India, fear of stigma prevents many women from reporting sexual violence. Deeply entrenched gender biases in laws, police force, judiciary and other state institutions continue to act as deterrents for women survivors to seek justice. Widespread attitudes in society that, until recently, accepted such violence as a routine matter without expressing any outrage also continue to lead to high levels of violence against women that we witness today. Moreover, in countries like India, unlike her western counterparts, needs to improve health sector’s capacity to respond to violence against women and better support for women who experience it.

This programme should make it possible to tackle the roots of this global problem by encouraging a new perception of the roles of women and men in society. By turning men as well as women into instruments of change, the initiative will have a better chance of success in the long term.

Hence by organizing such a seminar, INCITE expresses solidarity with the citizens key demands for faster implementation of various measures to improve women’s safety and reduce violence against them.INCITE pledges to revive its campaign on ending violence against women, while calling for the economic, social and political empowerment of women in India and beyond.
