Meet Champion Survivor Shannon Miller – September 19, 2013 at 9:00 PM EDT

America’s Most Decorated Gymnast | 7-Time Olympic Medalist | Cancer Survivor

Featured Guest – Shannon Miller is The Most Decorated American Gymnast in history. She is the only American to rank among the Top 10 All-Time gymnasts and the only female athlete to be inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame - twice! Shannon's winning record includes 59 International and 49 National competition medals; over half are gold.

Join us for this extraordinary radio segment on September 19, 2013 at 9:00 PM EDT with an Olympic cancer survivor Shannon Miller. Her quest to win took an unexpected turn in 2010 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Competing with Cancer (http://shannonmillerlifestyle.com/competing-with-cancer) wasn't something Miller anticipated as a married 34-year-old new parent to her son Rocco. A routine screening revealed germ cell ovarian cancer; she had no symptoms.

During chemotherapy treatment, Miller was an “open book,” inspiring millions with written and video diaries. Her YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j82N7t5TJq0) “wig party and head shaving” revealed a vulnerability experienced by millions of survivors worldwide. The Oklahoma native remains open and public about her diagnosis and treatment while continuing to empower women to make their health a priority. Miller’s recent media appearances include: The Doctors, Katie (Katie Couric), Marie Osmond, Sanjay Gupta, and The Balancing Act with Lifetime Television. Miller is currently cancer free and continues to be a strong advocate for early detection.

Ovarian cancer affects 1 out of 72 women. An estimated 700,000 women are diagnosed with cancer each year. There are more than 7 million women cancer survivors in the United States. Recently, Shannon Miller connected with nearly a thousand “cancer winners” at our country’s Inaugural National Women’s Survivors Convention (http://www.survivorsconvention.com/). Serving as the convention’s Honorary Chairperson, Miller shared her own journey through ovarian cancer – inspiring other women to persevere when cancer hits home.

Upon retiring from Olympic competition, Miller earned a law degree and worked as a motivational speaker while developing "Shannon Miller Lifestyle" to encourage health and fitness for women and children. She launched the company along with her series of fitness books, cookbooks and fitness DVD’s in July, 2010. Then in 2011, she created the Shannon Miller Walk-Fit Program: an online tracking and incentive program.

Through her website, book, advocacy, and radio show, Miller helps patients and survivors maintain a positive attitude, conquer obstacles and restore balance. Earlier this month (on September 3, 2013), Miller launched another campaign she calls “Lace Up to Beat Cancer,” featuring shoe tags for charity. The Shubeez (http://shubeez.com/) partnership provides collectable tags with a message of hope and inspiration in the fight against cancer.

In this episode of Because Hope Matters Radio, Miller will share her passion to make a difference for others and the blessing of survivorship – plus the news of her "miracle" baby girl, Sterling. Join us for a compelling half-hour experience of leading a healthy and balanced life with Champion Survivor Shannon Miller. Listeners nationwide are sure to walk away filled with hope and inspiration.
