GREATER KAILASH, India - Sept. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Ashiana Housings another grand step towards CSR

Aggressively working towards Woman Empowerment

For more than 30 years now, the story of Ashiana Housing Ltd. is a saga of unabated growth and path breaking steps.

Ashiana Housing Ltd., is one of the group which is making spontaneous efforts of ‘Nurturing Smiles’, and as a part of CSR initiative, is nurturing the tender smiles of its workforce by taking different education drives. Another such great initiative taken recently by the group is the skill-training program to improve the living condition of rural women.

A sizable number of women laborers work in the construction sector. However, these women have no career prospects and are unable to provide proper shelter, food or education to their children. Understanding the seriousness of the issue, Ashiana group has taken steps towards women empowerment by organizing skill-training programs for women laborers who work at Ashiana group construction sites.

Sharing more details, Col. Ashok Gongopadhyay, CSR Consultant, Ashiana Housing Ltd. said, “We strongly believe in empowering the women who work at our construction sites. Most such women are employed only for side working or as helpers, which are very low paying jobs. Thus, to empower them, Ashiana has started a skill training program and as part of trainings we provide those better employability options for better wages.”

In the first phase of the program, Ashiana group has trained approximately 40 such women laborers at their Bhiwari site. These women are trained to become masons and are giving trainings for tile setting, grouting and for doing plaster on walls. In addition, these women are also educated in basic hygiene and health issues. During training, Ashiana group also provides a stipend under minimum wage laws by Rajasthan government to these women. Ashiana group is also planning to run the same training program at their construction sites in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jamshedpur as well.

Providing additional details on the training programs, Col. Gongopadhyay added, “As part of the training program, women are provided practical training along with theory classes in the morning. At the end of each skill training program, an external authority conducts a written as well as practical examination and once cleared, each woman is provided with a certification by CIDC (Construction Industry Development Council) of Goverment of India and ministry of labor.”

As part of the next phase of training program, is conducted after three years, all certified semi skilled women / men are given an advanced training for more complicated tasks such as pasting tiles on wall, skirting, etc.

Over the years, Ashiana group has opened many growth avenues for women laborers. Many women have been deployed as guards at Ashiana projects; and many others are working as masons. As per Col. Gongopadhyay, “This training would provide a wider range of employability options to these women and even if they move to another construction site, we will have no issues. For us at the Ashiana group, this is a mission for uplifting the women folks and which tent amounts to woman empowerment.”
