BUEA, Cameroon - Sept. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University today announced that it has received an extraordinary collection of publications in the areas of social and environmental sciences as well as global health. SMU is one of the universities in 138 countries benefiting from this gift from the Global Development And Environment (GDAE) Institute at Tufts University in the United States.

“The library at Saint Monica University has been significantly enriched by this great collection of publications and we’re very grateful for the various institutions that made this possible,” said Professor Januarius Jingwa (JJ) Asongu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SMU. “As a young university, one of our priorities is to establish a good modern library that will meet the needs of our students and faculty. This collection goes a long way in helping us realize that goal and we’ll make the best use of the material provided.”

The collection is called “The Social Science Library: Frontier Thinking in Sustainable Development and Human Well-Being.” The Social Science Library (SSL), which is a contribution to the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development, contains over 3,400 full-text journal articles, book chapters, reports, and working papers in Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Social Psychology, Sociology and Political Science. The Library also includes full bibliographic references (including abstracts) to more than 6,000 additional articles. In addition, there are two CDs of publications on sustainable development from the United National Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD); one CD on environment topics from Worldwatch Institute; and four hours of multimedia DVDs that accompany Horizon International’s book “Water and Sanitation Related Diseases and the Environment: Challenges, Interventions, and Preventive Measures.”

“We’re extremely grateful to the GDAE Institute at Tufts University and other contributing partners for providing the SMU Library with this great collection,” said Mr. John Achakeng Nkemka, Director of Library Services at SMU. According to Dr. Neva Goodwin, Co-Director of GDAE Institute, “The goal of the SSL is to assist scholars, thinkers, policy makers, and students in transitional and developing countries to contribute to, and to benefit from, the on-going creation of social science knowledge and understanding.”

The content selected for the SSL has been carefully organized to enable users to find material of interest quickly and efficiently; give global attention and emphasis to those social science writings that are most likely to contribute to understanding and promotion of sustainable development and human well-being; assist scholars and thinkers in developing countries to participate fully in the on-going development of social science knowledge and understanding; and mimic web functions, such as search capabilities, so as to assist scholars and students to make good use of the web when they do have access.
