What Is Back Pain?

“Simply put, and obviously, back pain is pain felt in the back,” says Dr. Rovner. It can have a sudden onset, or it can be a chronic pain. It can also be constant or irregular. Depending on the degree of pain, it can stay in one place or radiate to other areas. The degree can range from a dull ache to a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. Depending on the anatomical site where it is felt, back pain can be classified into neck pain, middle back pain, lower back pain, or tailbone pain. The duration can be classified into acute (up to 12 weeks), subacute (the second half of the acute period, 6 to 12 weeks), and chronic (more than 12 weeks).

Back Pain Management

The cause of back pain can vary from one person to another. Dr. Rovner explains that it can be due to physical strain and fatigue or as a result or symptom of a more serious illness. However, they all usually come from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine; thus, they can be relieved or managed in the same way. The most common home therapy for back pain is the application of heat (although in some cases for some people, cold therapy works better). Some people opt to undergo alternative medication rather than take synthetic pain killers; some of the most common back pain management therapies are back massage, chiropractics, acupuncture, and even additional physical exercise to some.
