$10.7 Million Renovation Complete on Historic Pickens County Courthouse

ATLANTA - Sept. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- September 11, 2013 – The Pickens County Courthouse recently underwent major changes, including a large addition comprising of 54,000 square feet and renovations to the existing 12,000 square feet building in Jasper, Georgia. Atlanta’s New South Construction executed the $10.7 million phased construction project in north Georgia.

New South enlisted local partners to assist with the project, which broke ground in April 2012. The 66,000-square-foot new-build and renovation consisted of renovating one and adding four new courtrooms, while also renovating  eight holding cells in the original 65-year-old courthouse. Pickens County Courthouse serves as the countycourthouse for Jasper, Nelson, Talking Rock, Tate and Marble Hill, as well as the Appalachian Judicial Circuit, which includes several surrounding counties.

“We provided very necessary upgrades to the courthouse, while being extremely cautious not to tarnish the rich history that is preserved inside the courthouse,” said Charlie Parrish, Project Manager with New South Construction. “New South is very proud of this project and the relationships formed with the county and Jasper community.”

The first phase of the project focused on the construction of the new building, as well as all utilities and site work to the north, south and west portion of the new addition. The second phase consisted of the demolition of the Annex and site work on the east section. The project took 15 months to complete and was part of the 2008 S.P.L.O.S.T.

JKH Architects served as architect. Crystal Marble and Blue Ridge Marble collaborated on restoring the marble. New South also worked with local subcontractors such as Wigington Contractors, Childer’s Foundations and Heritage Plumbing for the project. The new courthouse adds to New South Construction’s list of municipal buildings they have completed including Canton City Hall, Riverdale City Hall and Community Center, the City of Douglasville Public Safety and Municipal Court and Municipal Court and Garden City Town Center.
