Justice in Education Network Launches “Leading Minds” National Video Series

Pow-Wows and Picnics Transform Education in Albuquerque: Untold Stories from Schools that Rock

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sept. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Two public schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico are flipping the traditional school model, and finding unprecedented success. The new “Leading Minds on Schools That Rock” webisode series by the Justice in Education Network (JEN), highlights how these schools are embracing the traditions and values of local families, not typical of most school districts.

In the premiere video, Albuquerque Public Schools board member, Lorenzo Garcia, shares the untold story of how the Native American Community Academy (NACA) and South Valley Academy (SVA) embrace culture and family wisdom as a starting point for educating children. “We are looking to build community schools…NACA will have a Pow-Wow and 800 people will show up. South Valley will have a meeting of parents in a community garden and hundreds will show up to help. That’s a different kind of relationship than we are used to in public schools,” explains Garcia.

The“Leading Minds on Schools That Rock”webisode series highlights stories from national leaders actively transforming how students learn. Created by Justice Matters, a national organization, JEN brings together educators from around the country who are creatively and intentionally incorporating social and racial justice values in and out of the classroom.

“Our “Leading Minds” webisodes spark imagination as we develop a vision for what education can be. We want to share wisdom, strategies and practices from leaders around the country on how to engage families across generations and create new models that work for families of color,” says Olivia E. Araiza, executive director of Justice Matters.

The JEN includes six schools around the country with social justice principles that engage families, develop students into change agents, embrace community and incorporate culture into learning. The schools, located in mostly underserved communities of color, include:  El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice (http://www.elpuente.us/) (Brooklyn, NY), Social Justice High School (http://sj.lvlhs.org/) and Telpochcalli School (http://www.telpochcalli.cps.k12.il.us/) (Chicago, IL), South Valley Academy (http://www.southvalleyacademy.org/) and the Native American Community Academy (http://www.nacaschool.org/)(Albuquerque, NM), and June Jordan School for Equity (http://jjse.org/) (San Francisco, CA).

Justice Matters is a national racial justice movement building organization dedicated to education policy rooted in community vision.
