Going With The Flow Tour - River Network Ambassadors Launch Year-Long Journey

Unique Back to School Adventure Advancing Collaborative Water Solutions

PORTLAND, Ore. - Sept. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Portland, OR - The Frieder-Stanzione Family, keenly interested in sustainability, and eager to “road school” their 9 year old son, are thrilled to have embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. Using water as a theme for a year-long road trip across the United States and beyond, they will use this experience to meet and help shine a light on local sustainability efforts, river heroes and environmental innovators along the way.

Throughout the Going with the Flow Tour, Julie, Charlie and Johnny will serve as volunteer ambassadors for River Network, a national nonprofit organization that supports more than 2,000 local water protection groups throughout the US.

In this capacity, the family’s water tour will include visits with local organizations, schools, public officials, scientists and sustainability champions to learn about and help advance collaborative water solutions.

Serving as River Network family ambassadors makes our trip so much more meaningful by allowing us to connect locally and uniquely with interesting people and beautiful rivers”, said Julie Frieder. “It also complements the approach we are using for Johnny’s “road school” where water and sustainability are our framework for teaching science, history, geography and, of course, physical education.”

Johnny is ready for an adventurous school year. Equipped with his own curiosity, kayak and camera, he will help explore and present water problems and solutions through the eyes of a 4th grader.

I’m having fun and learning a lot about rivers, how they flow, fish and wildfires. It’s fun being on the road”, said Johnny Stanzione.

Already, the family has met with dozens of community-based groups working to find solutions to protect local waterways, from Colorado through the Northwest, Alaska to the Redwoods of Northern California and back up the Oregon Coast. They now begin making their way east.

Their learning experiences along the way are being recorded and shared in blogs, video, photos and social media posts at http://www.rivernetwork.org/flowtour and www.Facebook.com/GoingWithTheFlowTour.

Support for the Tour is being provided by River Network, Bridgestone Americas/Bridgestone Retail Operations and Peaceful-Planet.com.

Together, Julie Frieder and Charlie Stanzione have 50 years of experience on sustainability and hydrogeology. Julie started her career preparing a solid waste management plan for Monroe Country, Indiana. After that she moved to Washington, DC and served as a staffer to the President’s Council on Sustainability Development. After 8 years with the US Environmental Protection Agency, Julie took a position with Calvert Investments, a leading sustainable and responsible investment company where, as a senior sustainability analyst, she has worked on water risk, collective engagement, and transparency and disclosure.

Charlie has worked with a Denver-based engineering firm specializing in water rights and water planning. As a senior partner with 25 years of experience, Charlie has first-hand knowledge of the technical, legal and political reality of water scarcity in the West. He is also an amateur photographer and is excited to showcase the rich and varied river stories upstream and down.
