LOS ANGELES - Sept. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Kate Jones was once a dangerous man's lover. Now, she's his dangerous enemy.

It was a bad idea for Kate to steal money from Roberto Salazar–her former lover and vicious leader of a Mexican drug cartel. For the last ten years–through five action-packed novels by author DV Berkom–Kate has been on the run from Salazar, who is determined to find her and make her pay.

Said BigAl’s Books and Pals of  Yucatan Dead: "I enjoy books with kick-ass female protagonists and Kate Jones fits the bill perfectly. Yucatan Dead ratchets up the tension from the start as Kate deals with hit women, warring Mexican drug cartels, and unofficial paramilitary organizations. Survival is never a given.”

Yucatàn Dead is the sixth installment of DV Berkom’s thriller series that deals with the fallout from Kate’s bad choice made in her twenties and how, over a decade later, she’s offered the choice to stop running and fight back.

Bad Spirits, the first book in the series, takes place when Kate is fresh out of college and on vacation in Mexico. While there, she becomes involved with the charismatic Roberto Salazar, unaware he is the ruthless leader of a drug cartel. By the time she realizes her mistake, it’s too late. Desperate to escape, she steals a backpack full of drug money and runs for the border. Salazar doesn’t take kindly to being ripped off and, with Kate’s betrayal fueling him, is more than determined to track her down and make her pay. The next four books in the series follow Kate to a different part of the world as she attempts to stay one step ahead of Salazar: Alaska (Dead of Winter), Hawaii (Death Rites), Arizona (Touring for Death), and the Caribbean (Cruising for Death).

Now, Yucatàn Dead joins Kate a little over ten years after her fateful decision to run. Should she continue to run, or turn and fight the evil that pursues her? Soon, she finds herself working against the cartels deep in the Yucatàn jungle with a group of off-the-grid commandos.

“I’ve had a lifelong love affair with Mexico,” Berkom explains. “I was six years old the first time I crossed the border with my family and have been back many times since, often for extended periods. After a recent trip to the Yucatàn Peninsula, I returned home with the kernel of a story that became Yucatàn Dead. Since I'm a novelist and basically lie for a living, I made up a group of off-the-grid commandos working deep in the jungle, fighting the cartels. Little did I know at the time that groups of locals have steadily begun taking up arms against the cartels, unable to stand by and watch them turn their home into a violent wasteland.”

Berkom is currently working on the next as-yet-untitled book in the series, where Kate stumbles upon the main reason the cartel has been after her for so many years.

Besides the entertainment value, Berkom hopes readers will take note of “the underlying theme, which is what’s happening in Mexico: the way the people are starting to fight back against the influence of the cartels. This book is not journalism by any means, but I like to have a little bit of truth in it. Also, I want women to realize how strong they are–that they can take care of themselves, they can fight back. Kate doesn’t know that at the beginning, but she learned along the way, so now she’s fighting back and not just running.”
