Boris was contacted by Darren Chow, 33, to help deliver a surprise proposal to Christine Kou at one of his shows at the Canadian National Exhibition. They devised a way to bring the couple on stage from a large audience of thousands to showcase immediate effects of hypnosis. Everything went according to plan - in normal questioning on stage, the couple devulged that they have been dating for six years, while not yet married or having plans to get married. Boris instantly hypnotized Darren Chow to propose, making it look like an improvised prank at a hypnosis show. Darren was given a suggestion to be unable to deliver the lines. After a short period of fumbling the words, Boris brought out large cardboard signs to show the speechless Christine Kou and the audience that the proposal was not a joke. The signs were delivered by friends prior to the performance and had large words “Christine, Will You Marry Me?” set on the background of pictures of the couple during their courtship. At that point, Darren got on one knee and took out a ring. Christine said “Yes”!
In order to prepare for his part, Darren watched online videos of hypnotized subjects to learn how to react. To make his fumbling words delivery convincing, the movie “The King’s Speech" proved helpful. The surprise occasion happened on Saturday, August 17, 2013 and made national and international headlines as video crew from CityTV and Toronto Star newspaper were on site.
