Following his dream of being a cartoonist, Zack Hix works at overcoming chronic mental health challenges by starting business to share his story of hope and passion for cartooning.
By: Kim Hix Simpsonville, South Carolina: A CNN Reporter recently released an article titled “Drawing Cartoons empowers Teen with Mental illness” http://www.cnn.com/ Zack Hix is only 18 years old but he has struggled working through the effects of multiple mental health disorders since birth. Not only has he had to struggle with and endure the effects of these illnesses that can and do cause huge disruptions in his life and the families, but he also endured years of bullying through Middle school. He found an outlet to help ease some of his suffering through drawing. His art helps him express himself in ways words cannot always do and through the help of his mom Kim, he is turning hisartwork into a business the family hopes will help him live independently and provide an income, rather than being unemployable or relying on governmental assistance After giving a few t-shirts away and then getting requests for more, Kim and Zack launched www.goodboyroy.com in 2010. While this is meant to help Zack earn an income, it also helps others as they can draw inspiration from his artwork and his strength to overcome the challenges he is faced with daily. In addition, a portion of every sale goes to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI www.nami.org the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raise awareness and build a community for hope for all of those in need. Finally, the Hix family business is providing jobs to other Americans as they strive to make each and every product they produce in the USA. “Offering American Made products just feels good” Kim Hix said. At the same time, retailers who are interested in carrying Good Boy Products in their stores can contact Good Boy Roy via their web site. Every retailer that carries the Good Boy Roy Brand products will be helping those with mental illness.
