ATLANTA - Sept. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Georgia Humanities Council President Jamil Zainaldin is now a featured weekly contributor to the successful SaportaReport, an online civic website with nearly 50,000 monthly unique visitors and a weekly email that is sent to nearly 15,000 subscribers.

As a longstanding historical leader in the state, Zainaldin will lend his insights into the history, evolution and culture of Georgia.

“Jamil’s Georgia” column will join the team of a Pulitzer Prize nominee and five former longtime Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporters and other civic leaders on SaportaReport.com, which was founded by Maria Saporta, Atlanta’s leading business and civic reporter.

“What Jamil does so skillfully is bring history to life and makes it relevant and applicable to what’s happening today,” Saporta said. “He has a remarkable ability to weave together themes and personalities in our history.”

In his column, Zainaldin plans to delve into Georgia’s influences, history and progression. The column extends beyond a basic history lesson and will encompass diversity, culture, topography and more through Zainaldin’s rich storytelling. His premier column discussed the importance and consequences of the Atlanta campaign, and fall, during the Civil War.

Zainaldin’s historical career spans more than three decades. Before coming to Atlanta, he worked in Washington D.C. as a staff member for the U.S. House Select Committee on Aging, a researcher for the National Council of Senior Citizens and as Deputy Director of the American Historical Association.

In 1997 he accepted the position as president of the Georgia Humanities Council, a nonprofit organization focusing on Georgia’s cultural preservation. At the Georgia Humanities Council, he played a significant leadership role in the development of the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the first Internet-based state encyclopedia that has won national recognition.

“The Georgia Humanities Council is excited about the partnership with the SaportaReport. It’s a unique opportunity to share with the Report’s readers about our place – Georgia,” said Kelly Caudle, project director and managing editor of the council.

Saporta, an award-winning journalist who reported for the AJC for 27 years, joined the Atlanta Business Chronicle in September 2008 and started SaportaReport in February 2009. The site’s columnists discuss a range of regional issues from politics to transportation as well as features about local personalities to weekly movie reviews.
