Home Helpers Spreads Awareness about Fall Prevention among Senior Citizens

Local Home Care Agency Offers Tips to Ensure Senior Safety

San Mateo, CA, September 9,  2013 – Falls are the leading cause of injury death among older Americans, and every year nearly one out of three adults age 65 and older will fall. Because September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, Home Helpers of San Mateo County is educating the local community on steps they can take to ensure their aging loved ones’ safety and independence at home.

In 2012, more than 18,000 senior citizens died from injuries related to unintentional falls. According to FallPrevention.org (http://www.fallprevention.org/), 16 percent of all emergency department visits and almost seven percent of all hospitalizations are for fall-related injuries. In addition, falls account for more than 90 percent of broken hips, and only half of those injured will fully recover.

“Being aware of fall risk factors and prevention steps can have a huge impact on the safety of senior citizens in the home,” said Mitch Williams, owner of Home Helpers of San Mateo County. “Reviewing risk factors with your aging loved ones and taking precautionary measures can increase their longevity and provide peace of mind to the families.”

Below are some steps families can take to reduce the risk of falls:

Identify fall risk factors, including vision and balance problems.
Remove tripping hazards, such as extension cords, from the home.
Avoid using low shelves and cabinets below waist level
Ensure the floors of frequently used rooms have tiles to prevent skidding.
Try to avoid the use of stairs by preparing a room for the aging loved one on the ground floor.

Because every home is different, it is important to customize a fall prevention plan specifically designed for your home and loved one’s needs in addition to the above steps. It is also helpful to see a physician who can provide increased insight on fall risk factors.
