Follow on Google News | Emily Clark Memorial Motorcycle Ride on September 7By: Golden Kidz Emily Clark was a young lady who lost her battle with childhood cancer. The race is being held in support of her family and in honor of Emily. Alicia Dennison, the founder of the local childhood cancer awareness organization, Golden Kidz, said, “This ride is a way for Golden Kidz to honor Emily Clark and to let everyone that knew her know that we will never forget her fight or her beautiful smile.” According to the American Childhood Cancer Foundation, cancer is the #1 cause of disease-related death for children. Every single day, parents learn that their children have cancer, while others do not survive the disease. Although the 5 year survival rate has increased to 80%, this does come at a cost. Those that do survive 5 years and beyond are met with late-effects of treatment, such as heart disease, lung damage, secondary cancers, infertility, growth deficits, cognitive impairment, and hearing loss. While the children may survive the cancer, they may not survive its after effects, proving that childhood cancer lasts for life. Most children are diagnosed with Leukemia with brain cancers accounting for 27% of childhood cancers. Soft tissue cancers come in 3rd place at 9% and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and kidney and renal tying for fourth. The other childhood cancers include bone and joint and Hodgkin Lymphoma. To honor Emily and all of the children who have lost their lives to cancer and those who are surviving with the consequences of it, registration for the event is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost is $15 for a single rider and $20 for doubles. There will be food and drinks courtesy of Tal Callahan. Participants are also able to participate in a 50/50 drawing. A rain date has been scheduled for September 8 at the same time and same place.
