Down Syndrome Effects

Loving Andrew is a heartfelt memoir revealing a mother’s true story about parenting her first child Andrew, born with Down Syndrome, and the family’s loss of a baby to cancer. Romy Wyllie’s book intimately details the experience and struggles of rearing Andrew, and how Andrew and his family coped with his Down Syndrome effects from early nursing to his death. Wyllie’s parenting mistakes are bravely included.

The book’s foreword is by Brian Chicoine, MD. "...you will get to know Andrew, learn his story, appreciate him, and love him..."

Andrew’s contribution to society is remarkable. He learned to read and write. He learned to play the piano, swim, and to travel on Chicago’s public transportation system alone. Andrew held a store job for 25 years and won Special Olympics medals. He became the head altar boy in his church.

Handicapped Children & the Developmentally Disabled

Included in the story of Andrew’s life is vital information, applicable to all parents, care providers, and a broad audience about improvements in medical technology such as abnormality prenatal testing. The book helps readers better understand how the developmentally challenged can positively contribute to society, and how changing attitudes will continue to open more job opportunities and informed assistance.

Loving Andrew includes the history of and other scientific facts about Down Syndrome. The book provides a "Selected Bibliography" for additional information about Down Syndrome, including the special needs of those children and adults. The book provides an Appendix, "Discovering a Chromosome Abnormality," which lists additional sources providing more professional information.

Coping With Schizophrenia & Alzheimer’s Memory

While coping with schizophrenia, in Andrew’s later years, he managed to "remain active, happy, and full of love." He was even able to discuss his symptoms. Later, Alzheimer’s diminished his memory and he died at the young age of 52. His short life was reinforced by the loving support of his mother, father, and two younger siblings.
