CollaborArt Releases Involution-An Odyssey: Saints and Scientists: Two Mythologies—a Single Root

Involution-An Odyssey Reconciling Science to God throws petrol on the debate by challenging the core of scientific thought. Instead of random change, it offers progress through the encoding of memory. Science has been the recovery of that memory

When Philippa Rees offered Involution as a scientific thesis at Cambridge forty years ago, it received open scorn from scientists for its revolutionary hypothesis. It proposed that the language and methods of science, precluded perception of what underpins science and creation itself. That was before science caught up; it might be ready now.

Since the followers of Plato and Aristotle parted the ways to knowledge, science has separated intellect from experience, mind from matter, heart from head and ultimately consciousness from the material universe. By retaking the journey it is this division that this poetic Odyssey seeks to illuminate and heal.

“A controversial hair-and-eye-brow-raising subject…insightful…brave… Getting close to science as well as to God at the same time, that's no mean feat.” Ervin Laszlo

Rees makes a second assertion:the history of Science has been the recovery of memory. The brain receives and interprets the consciousness encoded in DNA.

Involution has been the ‘informing’ of matter by consciousness at every level of complexity: information which spurs the accelerating convergence to the single species, Man. This information is encoded in DNA as memory, a shared memory that interconnects all life. The recovery of that encoded experience is through the inspired genius momentarily encountering his memory through focussed contemplation. Saints and scientists break the same bread.

Thus Involution re-introduces ‘purpose’ through co-creation both from and to the archivist of DNA. Mavericks led what DNA retained.

According to Involution, the contemplative genius offers the ‘eureka’ moments of recovered memory to the collective intellect, which formulates that inspiration as theory. Through this modelling, intellect perceives (falsely) that the material world is ‘outside’ and independent of the observation. The role of the observer known in quantum theory is here extended throughout the consensual world. What is discovered inwardly is transposed outwardly.

Thus the inspired right-brained geniuses that led the journey were usurped by the collective left brain of acceptable science. The transfer of memory to intellect builds a consensual reality, a seemingly solid world that now is found to be missing most of its matter. Intellect exiles Man from his deeper self, his embrace within the creation, the creation of consciousness.

“The beauty of your writing is that you allow the truth to breathe.” Philip Franses (Editor Holistic Science Journal)

This complement to Darwinism re-examines (and celebrates) the unique individual and the critical contribution of his experience to the collective journey of Mankind. To describe a rainbow in terms of its physics leaves everything of importance unsaid; the colours, shape and the glory. So too with this rainbow of a book; an arc through the history of conceptual thought, a meditation on the nature of knowledge, a travel though Western culture in the company of Reason and Soul, irreverent and amusing companions.

“The author’s grasp of the principal elements of Western culture is masterly and her poetic narrative woven together with extraordinary subtlety. Her footnotes show a rare depth of perceptive scholarship” David Lorimer, Director, Scientific and Medical Network

About the Author

Involution was first conceived in 1970, after some profound mystical experiences. Rees first presented her Theory of Involution as a scientific monograph to the Cambridge University Epiphany Philosophers, and the Oxford Modern Churchman’s Union. Although decades before the recent ideas about the language and plasticity of DNA, her theory was endorsed by leading scientists: Konrad Lorenz, Arthur Koestler and Irwin Schumacher. In the prevailing Darwinian climate even they could not persuade a publisher.

Brought up in the conflicted atmosphere of apartheid South Africa Philippa has both Boer and British blood, and when she was not imprisoned in boarding school she had her horse and the freedom of a whole country, Lesotho. With both a black and a white mother and a grandfather fluent in two African languages hers was an atypical childhood. Related to Elizabeth Barrett Browning and with family connections to George Eliot, other contributions came from five faculties sampled at University before taking degrees in Psychology and Zoology under the seminal palaeontologist Raymond Dart and the embryologist B.I.Balinsky.  Encountering Konrad Lorenz at the Max Planck Institute added the dynamics of animal behaviour. All are relevant to this work that spans the centuries of Western thought and all the disciplines of science. Narrow specialisation might have missed the over-arching unity. It may also miss the importance of this book.
