Three Teams Battle in Junior Roller Derby Benefit For Breast Cancer Awareness

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Aug. 31, 2013 - PRLog -- The mixed scrimmage will be used to show support for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.  The junior roller derby bout, which occurs during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, has been dubbed “Gritty in Pink”, and will be held at the Skate Station Funworks located at 230 Blanding Blvd., in Orange Park, Florida, at 6:00pm on Sunday, October 6th.  Skate Station doors will open at 5:30pm for the bout.  Admission for the event is $9 and children ages 10 and under are admitted free.  The Cherry Bomb Charmers are proud to offer free admission to all active-duty military with valid military ID.

To honor victims and survivors of breast cancer, the derby skaters from the Cherry Bomb Charmers, the SK8 City Sirens, and the ACR Stingers will forego their usual team jerseys to don special pink or white jerseys for the bout.  Charmers’ fans are encouraged to wear pink to the bout in support of the cause.  When asked how she felt about exchanging her “Charmer red” jersey for the pink and white jerseys of the event, junior derby skater Melanie Quinones, aka “Smelly Melly”, said, “It would be an honor and a privilege to be able to show my support to all the ladies who have or will have to battle breast cancer, and for those who have beaten it already.”

Two dollars of every $9 admission will be donated to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. "We are proud to team up with our derby sisters to promote awareness," said Dana Wolfe, President & General Manager of the Cherry Bomb Charmers Junior Roller Derby, "It’s important that a sport dominated by women should recognize and support the need for breast cancer awareness."  The issue is an important one to Wolfe, whose mother underwent a mastectomy for breast cancer in 2007.  "The Charmers are all about empowerment," Wolfe continued, “We want to promote education about breast cancer and to stress the importance of early detection.  We want to help empower women everywhere to take control of their breast health."
