Follow on Google News | Roller Derby Coming to Belle Clair Fairgrounds in 2014By: Confluence Crush “Skating at Belle Clair will put us in the backyard of thousands of current and potential fans, including those at Scott Air Force Base located just down the road,” said league President Amy Whited. “Belle Clair is well known in the area as a destination for interesting events, and we feel it’s a great fit for women’s flat track roller derby.” Confluence Crush will kick off its 2014 home season on Saturday, January 25th. Additional dates include March 29, May 10 and August 2. Opponents and door times will be announced soon. In the meantime, the Crush has one more bout scheduled as part of its 2013 season, when they will visit the Southern Illinois Roller Girls in Marion, Illinois on September 7. Between seasons the Crush plans a series of demos at area rinks, with dates and locations announced soon on the league’s website and Facebook page. The women are also recruiting new skaters on September 19 to begin training for the 2014 season. The league is operated “by the skaters, for the skaters,” and is a not-for-profit organization currently seeking 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. Confluence Crush was accepted into the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Apprentice Program in January 2013. About the WFTDA The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is the governing body for women’s flat-track roller derby, and a membership organization for the leagues to collaborate and network. The organization created and maintained the first standardized ruleset for the flat-track game. The WFTDA also serves as the sanctioning body for games, hosts tournaments, sets safety standards and provides insurance to athletes and leagues.
