By: Metropolis Agencies Award Winning Artist Oleg Lipchenko Explores Issues of Canadian Identity with his Inuit Inspired “Northern Suite” (Tuesday, August 27, 2013) - Canada is blessed with a rich mythology which links present day Canadians to our Aboriginal heritage, a reality that must contribute to a sense of continuity and an inclusive national identity although Inuit art forms and myths are not often explored in depth in our schools and our society. Oleg Lipchenko hopes to change that with his Northern Suite collection, a highly personal portrayal of rarely celebrated Inuit Myths, painstakingly rendered in exquisite detail using India ink and graphite. At a casual glance, Lipchenko’s multi layered figures are often seemingly hidden. Symbols emerge, animals take shape, and legends become unraveled only after a more careful and discerning examination, resulting in a dialogue with ancient tales and myths which innovatively connects the viewer across the millennia of storytelling tradition. "We are living in myths. Our peace of mind requires that all the facts and elements of the "real world" must be explained somehow. The myths of northern people are not fairy tales, they are (were) reality in its most understandable and meaningful state. The people of the North struggled to survive under extreme conditions at the "edge of the world," nevertheless forming a culture (a culture actually summarizing all their myths) so consummate and picturesque and in some aspects so different from the European (Western) tradition, that it fascinated me so deeply that it could not fail to inspire me," explains Lipchenko. Oleg ‘s work is a fusion of his own cultural heritage with traditional Inuit motifs and forms, creating something uniquely Canadian - a multicultural homage to a great story telling tradition. “‘Northern Suite’ easily passes the ultimate test of an artist, when the work magically leaves an indelible mark in the mind of a patron. The pieces keep flashing back in memory, haunting the viewer with detailed segments, colors and questions. At the first viewing, a visceral response is another clear indicator that the paintings are endowed with “some mysterious catalyzing energy, ” says Articsok Gallery Co-Founder, renowned artist in his own right, Peter Alexander Por. ABOUT OLEG LIPCHENKO An award winning illustrator, designer and painter who was trained in architecture, Oleg is also member of The Ukrainian Union of Artists, The Lewis Carroll Society of North America and CANSCAIP. His work distinctly represents a fascination with the play of light and dark and his preferred medium is pencil on paper for it's flexibility of use and the immediate ability to reflect his thoughts. Indeed Oleg refers to his sketches as "Improvization" ABOUT ARTICSOK GALLERY 1697 St. Clair Avenue West (Between Keele and Landsdowne) Co-founders Csilla Csiki and Peter Alexander Por, both with a great passion for art, resolved to open an art gallery with a difference in a newly renovated and reclaimed space just north of Toronto’s Junction art scene along Dundas West.
