PLANTATION, Fla. - Aug. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- A few years ago, CBS News conducted a poll about today’s contemporary office environment. What it revealed was that more than half of employees interviewed would be willing to work an additional hour every day if their workplace was better.

Whether you’re a new business owner looking for office space for lease or one with an established company that’s outgrown its current home, locating the best commercial property can have a big impact on you, your employees and your business model as a whole. Not only that, but underestimating the importance of your office layout can result in wasted space, less than ideal workflows and in some instances, can prevent employers from hiring new employees if the ones who are already there feel stifled by a poor floor layout.

Big Brands Understand Importance of Office Layout Design

Some of the biggest global brands move mountains to ensure the workspaces for their employees are conducive for productivity. “Worker oriented designs” mean better profits for the company and ideally, better bonuses and salaries for employees.

Most business owners say they simply have no idea to determine how well their floor plans are working and when they do spot problems, they’re unsure of who to call or how to remedy the problems. As a result, some search for new office space for rent. Sometimes, though, it’s an easy fix and requires a bit of office organization.

Wondering if your own office is operating inefficiently? Before leasing commercial office space, see if you recognize any of these patterns. If you do, your office floor space may not serve its purpose.

Look around. How does your office layout design "flow"? Where are employees collaborating? Are there a series of tables where impromptu meetings are being held for those sharing the same projects? If so, consider dividing those areas so that employees aren’t distracted by their co-workers, who happen to be at the next table with the same goal of brainstorming as well. The idea is not to eliminate these mini-meeting areas if they work for your employees, but to place them in better areas.

Where are your printers, servers, copiers and even paper shredders located? This technology, incredible as it is, can quickly become a burden for those trying to concentrate but are unable to do so every time the printer kicks in. It can also eliminate the proverbial “water cooler chatting” between co-workers. Consider a small equipment closet as a quieter area that won’t disturb employees and/or customers.

How do your cubicles fare? Do your employees have enough space? Too much space, maybe? The great thing about cubicles is the walls can be moved and shifted in seconds.

Finally, efficiency experts say having a supervisor’s team close together can improve efficiency as well. That might require moving employees around, but the end goal is to increase productivity. It’s time well spent and once you locate new commercial space for lease, you're already ahead of the game.
